From Quality Assurance

Friday, August 22nd, 2008 by Henke, AdminSquid

Hello developer’s log!

So I am the current QA-guy here at Shortfuse, pointing out the many flaws and faults of pre-release Colosseum. Naturally there are a lot of ’stuff’ in the game right now that needs fixing, but we’re making steady progress (really!).

This week we finished my first focus group test of Colosseum and a lot of interesting feedback was gathered, concerning the natural habitats of cacti among many other things. It’s really interesting to be the QA guy actually since you talk to so many different people, and sometimes someone points out something really special, such as the fact that our in-game cacti doesn’t grow naturally in the Middle-East (being somewhat of our ‘main theme’ for Colosseum). This of course is perfectly true, no one here just ever thought about it, but we should! Knowing is half the battle, yes?

Regarding the inclusion of the cacti, the jury is still out on that one.

Seriously though, I would like to thank all the testers again for helping us make Colosseum a better game, we really appreciate it!

Right, as you may or may not know I am also Community Guy here at Shortfuse and would like to remind everyone that our draw-a-sword contest is still open for business, if someone could send in a set of cutlery it would be nice, thank you (altough I doubt our art department would go for that, still… it would be an awesome unlockable for our dual wielder…).

We have actually gotten some pretty interesting submissions for the contest so far, which is very nice, thank you all! To tell you the truth I was kinda worried about how much interest a contest such as this could garner, our small company being new in the industry and this being our first game and all. Needless to say I’ve been positively surprised, you can be rest assured that more contests will follow for our later games! We’ll also try to involve ‘the community’ more actively in the whole process as soon as we get some forums and such. For example, it would be nice to have a poll for a community-decided returning character in Colosseum 2, such as Capcom had for the console-version of Street Fighter 4. And no, we’re not working on Colosseum 2, one of them is quite all that we can handle at the moment ;D. Anyhoo…

It’s a beatiful Friday afternoon here in Sweden and QA needs beer badly so I’m going to go home, to be frank. There’ll probably be some ingenious post with pictures about the Leipzig Games Convention on Monday if all of our bosses can be bothered to get around to it.

Grand Opening!!!

Friday, August 15th, 2008 by Larsolino

Welcome!

This is Lars Håhus writing, environmental artist at Shortfuse Games and temporary producer.

The temporary status is because the REAL producer and our CEO took their administrative butts on a trip to the Game Convention in Leipzig, leaving the Shortfuse team in my hands.

In other words, we have a whole week without Sebastian and Johan, meaning more work and less meetings!

This is not at all too bad right now, being in a very crunchy situation, trying to make everything happen that we want for the finished game. This is, as some of you might know, not an easy task.

We have a very clear goal to reach for by now, but things keep getting in the way. If it isn’t the XNA platform playing hard to get, it’s files being mistakingly deleted and then profusely screamed at. The latter is mostly art director Niklas having a tough time adjusting to the digital age, being an analog kind of guy.

Since E3, where Microsoft decided to show a few seconds of our game on their press conference, things have started to look more cheerful at work. It seems like even though we knew we were doing a good job with Colosseum, the fact that other people think so too made coming to the office everyday a whole lot smoother. Simply googling “Shortfuse” or “Colosseum” accompanied with XBLA gets more and more hits every day. Word spreads fast these days for sure, all thanks to this wonderful phenomenon called the Internet!

Right now, the design apartment of Shortfuse is tightening up the awards and unlockables system, all in the name of making Colosseum into a game that can be played for other reasons that just being the best fighter in the world, namely getting cool outfits and wielding even cooler weapons.

The single player mode is pretty much outlined and done, now it’s up to the programmers and us artists to make it happen. This far we’ve seen a few pretty weird looking bosses, some dodgy arenas and a whole bunch of cowardly enemies that are only in the game for an extreme beating. Does’nt sound too shabby does it!?

Today being Friday, 7 PM, sunny weather after a week of rain, I have to say it’s time to end this text. We all need to lead normal lives too, right? having your own game studio does mean a lot of work, but we can’t let it take completely over now, can we?

Remember to submit a sword design for our marvelous design-a-sword contest, and you might be the lucky one to get to have a sword of your own design in Colosseum!

Over and out
